“People know me as a funny guy with no cares in the world,” he says. “But I’ve been through hard times, depression.”

Known for his comedic character of Phua Chu Kang, Gurmit’s real life is far from all smiles and sunshine. His mother had always been his pillar of strength, when she was diagnosed with stage four stomach cancer, Gurmit was devastated and angry. “It was very painful for me to see my mum getting weaker and weaker,” Gurmit recalled his desperation for a miracle.
