The Man In The Family

Title: The Man in the Family Text: (various)

Family is often thought of as a place where we find love, joy and comfort. It requires effort and care to build such an environment. What role does the man play in the family, and how can he fulfil it?

Discussion Guide

1) Restoring God/Man Relationship
We can only be effective in our ministry and family when our vertical relationship with God is restored and strong. Do you agree? Why? What are 2-3 areas you need to get right with God? What challenges do you face?

2) Restoring Husband/Wife Relationship
The family is the foundation of society while the nucleus of a family is the husband and wife relationship. What are some trends or problems that can affect marriages negatively? How would a marriage with God at the centre look different from marriages that don’t acknowledge God? Read Ephesians 5:21-33. If you are a husband, how can you lead your wife considerately? What sacrifices ought you make? If you are a wife, how can you be a better support to your husband? What does submission look like in your marriage? How can your LG participate in sustaining and strengthening you in your marriage?

God wants us to restore our kinship (horizontal relationship with one another). List down some areas others have failed you, and other areas you have let others down. How can you repair the kinship this week? In this year of empowerment, will you ask the Holy Spirit to strengthen you to forgive and seek forgiveness? How can the LG and our mentors help us on this restoration journey?

3) Restoring Father/Child Relationship
God wants fathers to turn our hearts to our children. What are the practical ways we can become better parents? How can our mentors equip and support our mentees in parenting matters? What resources or other kinds of help would mentors need?

God also desires children to turn to their parents. Think about how your parents were brought up by their parents. How did their upbringing impact them as parents to you? How did your own upbringing impact you as a parent to your children today? Are there areas you want to work on, and how would you go about it? Share 2-3 ways you will honour your parents in the coming month (Exodus 20:12).
