Living Without Distractions

Each of us has only one life to live. But distractions can hinder us from making the most of it. What can we do to live with focus?

Discussion Guide

1) Live in expectation of Christ’s return (1 Thess 5:1-5)

If Christ were to come back tomorrow, what is one thing you would do differently? What is hindering you from doing it now? More often than not, speculations about how and when Christ will return can distract us from the real work of getting ready for His arrival. Why then are people engaged in these speculations?

Read 1 Thess 5:1-5. What does Paul mean when he says that "the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night" (v2)? Why does he see it important to remind the Church of this fact?

Besides speculations, we may also get distracted by aimless and sinful living. What are some common distractions that may cause us to live carelessly or ignorantly? How can the Life Group help one another to guard against distractions and prepare ourselves for Christ's return?

2) Live in response to my salvation (1 Thess 5:6-11)

Today we often read and hear news of wars, natural disasters, and atrocities. How do you feel? When you experience persecution and/or witness wicked acts around you, how do you think you will respond?

Read 1 Thess 5:6-11. The Bible has given us a blueprint of how Christians ought to shine in times of darkness. What does it mean to be alert (v6)? Why does Paul emphasise the need for self-control when responding with faith, love and hope (v8)?

What will enable you to stand firm to the very end (Matthew 24:13)? What do you have to do today to follow Christ Jesus as your commanding officer (2 Timothy 2:3-4)? How can the Life Group encourage and build up one another to follow Christ to the end?

From Series: "This Is Living"

We live in a world of uncertainty today. The economy's unpredictable, the terrorism threat is real, and moral values are shifting. Where there's uncertainty, it's easy to give in to fear of the unknown. Where there's pressure, it's easy to compromise on our values and forsake what we stand for. It's often easier to go with the flow. But is that truly living? In a thought-provoking study of the book of 1 Thessalonians, we examine what life with Christ should be - full of integrity, hope and promise - and learn how we can truly live.
