Beauty Of His Church

THE BEAUTY OF HIS CHURCH
Ephesians 3:10-13

The beauty of God's church does not lie in its stylish interior, engaging programmes or state-of-the-art technology. The church is beautiful because God has chosen it for a grand and cosmic purpose.

Discussion Guide

1) God's Church Is Beautiful To Him (v10 -12)

Use one word to describe what the church means to you. Why do you say that?

To God, the church is His primary agent to showcase His rich and multifaceted wisdom to the cosmic powers. What is God's wisdom referring to (read Eph 3:6)? Out of all His creation, God has chosen the church as the main instrument to express His wisdom. Why do you think this is so? What differentiates the church from God's other creation?

From Eph 3:10, we can infer that the heavenly hosts are paying close attention to how God expresses His manifold wisdom through the church. How do you feel, knowing that the cosmic powers are watching your every move? Just as national athletes see it an honour to represent their countries at international games, the church should find it a great privilege to represent God among the heavenly realms. Now that you realise the cosmic significance of the church's existence, how does it change the way you view the church? How does it change the way you view yourself, since you're part of the church?

How can the church partner with God to demonstrate His wisdom? For instance, God wants to use the church to reconcile and repair broken relationships. What are some relationships you know you need to help restore? How will you go about it? How will you do your best to maintain the unity among believers (Eph 4:3)? What can some practices that disrupt unity? What are some measures your LG can take to protect the unity you already share as believers in Christ?

2) God's Church Is Important To Us (v13)

In Eph 3:13, Paul asked the believers not to be discouraged that he was suffering as result of bringing the Gospel to them. Because Paul understood the primary role of the church in God's salvation plan, he saw the church important enough to give his life for it. Do you share Paul's conviction? Why do you say so? Paul was so touched by the Gospel that he was willing to give his all to build God's church. What are some ways you can build God's church today? What are some needs you see in the church and your LG that you can help to address and meet?

Though Paul loved the church, he was at times disappointed with believers who misunderstood him or questioned his credibility. If you were hurt by the church too, how has it affected your view of the church and/or your commitment to it? What would it take for you to set aside your grievances and seek reconciliation? Read Eph 3:16-19. God wants to strengthen your inner being with His Spirit so that you may know the reconciling love of Christ. Perhaps then you may find the strength to forgive and love those who hurt you.

When we want to glorify God and serve the church, there is nothing too small that we are unwilling to do and nothing too big that we cannot attempt! What is one 'small' area that God is calling you to serve in? Even if the task seems insignificant, why do you think it matters to God that you do it cheerfully and excellently? What is one 'big' area that God is calling you to serve in? How can you manage your fears or insecurities in the face of a daunting task? What can the LG do to cultivate a culture where serving God, whether in big or small ways, is deemed a joyful privilege?

What makes a church beautiful? Is it its clean white building? Or its stained-glass windows and classic pew sittings? Some of the most magnificent churches in the world are filled with nobody but tourists. What then, makes a church truly beautiful?
